Younger American playwrights, such as Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel, credit Albee's daring mix of theatricalism and biting dialogue with helping to reinvent the post-war American theatre in the early 1960's. His early works reflected a mastery and Americanization of the Theatre of the Absurd that found its peak in works by European playwrights such as Jean Genet, Samuel Beckett, and Eugène Ionesco. His works are considered well-crafted and often unsympathetic examinations of the modern condition. There is quite a bit of fourth wall breaking scattered throughout, and I’m not a fan of that. There were other profound moments as well. The moment the Angel of Death is revealed to us really moved me having that knowledge from the very first stage direction is what truly made the play. There is nice symbolism involved and the grandma character is wonderful when she really gets to talk to us. I can see it having theatrical value and playing out nicely on a stage, but it isn’t overly riveting. There is quite a bit of f Not the worst thing I’ve ever read but not particularly entertaining. The language and thematic symbolism within that language is what makes this such a fascinating play. There is a sandbox (no surprise), there is a family, there is a musician, and there is a young man, that is all you need to know.
It's the first play that I've read in a long time that speaks on so many levels while actually presenting close to nothing at all. I've been reading the reviews posted by others on here and simply do not understand how you couldn't appreciate this piece of work. The language and thematic symbolism within that language is what makes this such a fascin Wow Albee.
